DescriptionThe film is a lyrical portrait of the work atmosphere in part of the Ropery of the former Royal Dockyard at Chatham. Here the first processes of rope making were carried out, in a strictly segregated environment for women only. Until recently it was only for widows and orphans of service men and dockyard men. Voice-over memories from oral history interviews with the (mostly) women workers are combined with footage of people at work. It was heavy work, under an exacting regime, yet the solidarity and spirit of the generations who worked there are captured in the sounds and images of the Spinning Room.
