Tran T. Kim-Trang is a video artist who has exhibited her work nationally and internationally. Miss Tran was born in Saigon, Viet Nam and immigrated to the United States in 1975. She received her Master of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts, School of Art. Since 1991, Tran has been developing and producing experimental videos for an eight-tape series on metaphoric and physical blindness. In addition to the Introduction (aletheia) and Epilogue, the Blindness Series contains tapes exploring: 1) cosmetic surgery-Asian women and eyelid surgery (operculum); 2) sexuality--the eye, fear and fantasy of blindness, women and AIDS (kore); 3) technology--surveillance mechansims and other eve surrogates (ocularis ); 4) language--metaphors, folklore, anecdotes and theories of vision and blindness; 5) hysterical blindness--Cambodian women in Long Beach, CA; 5) actual blindness--blind culture (amaurosis ). Three out of eight tapes have been completed, including the award winning aletheia. As a curator, she has realized collaborative installations, gallery exhibitions and media screenings on issues concerning race, gender, technology and identity. She is active in a number of non-profit arts organizations within the greater Los Angeles area, including serving on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Art Resources, In.c (FAR) and the Exhibition Committee of RE:SOLUTION, the (new) Los Angeles Center for Photograhic Studies.
