For the June Cinenova Now Showing, artist Oreet Ashery has chosen to show Blue Diary by Jenni Olson (USA, 1997, 6mins) and In Loving Memory by Leone Knight (Australia, 1992, 5mins) alongside their own work What is it Like for You? (2000, 4mins).

The two films were chosen in relation to Ashery’s emerging project The Case of Kye (working title) based on the recent Gayle Newland’s court case. Newland was in a relationship with a woman for over two years presenting as a man called Kye Fortune and has been sentenced for eight years as a result. She recently won an appeal for a retrial.

A grainy black and white experimental film that uses performance to address the issue of a third sexuality that stands outside traditional gender representations.

Oreet Ashery 
Oreet Ashery is an interdisciplinary visual artist working with bio-political-fiction, gender materiality and potential communities. Ashery’s established practice manifest through distinct multiplatform projects and spans live situations and performances, moving and still image, writing, workshops and assemblages. Ashery’s recent large scale projects include Passing Through Metal, a sonic performance commissioned by LPS, Malmo, 2017, the web-series Revisiting Genesis, commissioned by The Stanley Picker Foundation and supported by the Welcome Trust, 2016, The World is Flooding, a Tate Modern Turbine Hall commission, 2014, and Party for Freedom, an Artangel commission 2013.

Cinenova: Now Showing began in March 2015 and runs monthly. The series intends to materialise relationships between contemporary artist moving image practice and the feminist and organising legacies present in the Cinenova collection.
