As part of the 50th anniversary of Warwick Arts centre, Ella (1986, WITCH/Catalyst Production) and Sistren in Photography (1991, Aphra Video) from the Cinenova Collection will be screened as part of the Black British Pioneers: Then and Now archival programme curated by Tosin Alapafuja.

A selection of documentary archival works, looking at the lives of Black British Pioneers within the arts – shedding a light on dance as resistance in the late 70s, a celebration of queer nightlife and the dance floor, as well as those who dedicated their time, energy and craft to making performance arts accessible to youth in their local communities.

A selection of documentary archival works, looking at the lives of Black British Pioneers within the arts – in celebration of those behind the camera, the visual artists who inspire, who shift culture and create new worlds. The photographers who are simultaneously storytellers and archivists, the designers and painters who actualise their imagination.

Ella (1986) ELLA – a black version of the fairy-tale story ‘Cinderella’, cleverly adapted and performed originally as a play, by Catalyst – a group of young black people based in Liverpool, who started their own drama/dance group and are involved in all aspects of production: choreography, scripting, directing, producing, song-writing, search for venues, costumes… the list is endless.

Sistren in Photography (1991) – an innovative and entertaining documentary that explores the varied work, motivation, politics and lifestyles of five Black women photographers based in Birmingham.
