‘Against the Current’ is an experimental documentary which takes both a historical and contemporary look at the lack of control women have over their own bodies, focusing mainly on childbirth and developments in reproductive technologies. Science is seen as offering only facts and is believed, like the media, to be objective, neutral and “in our own interest”. The video raises many questions such as why are the new technologies only available to white, middle‑class heterosexual women and why is so much money spent on “test‑tube” babies, while research into the causes of infertility is ignored?
