Azaadi
‘Azaadi’ is the story of Parvati, a woman held captive by her husband in a small basement room with a caged bird and a kitchen sink for company. A voice over expresses her feelings of despair and her frustrated rage is conveyed by strange camera angles and sudden bursts of movement. Kali, the Indian goddess of destruction, offers Parvati a magical world, urging her to write her own story, releasing her from her past and present and offering her hope for a vibrant future. The blue face and blood-stained lips and tongue of the invoked Kali shifts the film from a strange realism into a surreal fantasy. ’Azaadi’ is an intensely powerful visual expression of vengeful liberation.
