Cinderella's slipper, in the original grisly tale by Perrault, is so small that in their frantic desire to claim the Prince, the Ugly Sisters cut off their toes to try to squeeze into it. A tiny foot, useless for walking but a potent symbol of superior status, was, like a tiny waist, an essential asset for the success of a young woman in the marriage market. The film examines the meaning and the implication of deforming the bodies of women to match them to the symbols of man's imagining.
