Cast
The film constructs a rhythm between alternate gazes, between child and doll and between two women. Points of view merge through a mirror, forming a web of gazes. The mirror also conjures shifts across time and space. A rocking chair action in a mirror lynches the key strands of the film. The rocking crosses the full spectrum of points of view, moving from self to other and backwards and forwards from inanimate to animate. The gazes between the women meet in a mirror, oscillating in recognition of looking out at and looking back at.
In the film a doll is caressed by a little girl. Her imaginings bring the doll to life. Her focussed gaze upon the doll enacts an identification which is shown as a swapped identity with the doll through facial make up. Her desire for and her desire to be the other woman/doll are blurred. Later in the film this desire is transformed into an adult desire for women which is to be both desired and to desire. This active/passive dynamic is shown through the confusing of animate and inanimate female figures. The coming into and out of life, the interplay between subject and object in desire, is played out in passing between interior and exterior spaces. Spatial scale is distorted, it oscillates between the magnified and the miniature, from the imaginary spaces of the doll to the inter-soaking of land and sea.
