My grandmother was approaching her ninetieth birthday and I wanted to piece together some of the stories she had told me over the years to build up an image of the life of a Jewish woman born in Poland at the end of the last century?

Harriet Wistrich

‘Ewa’ is a moving account of a Jewish woman's survival under Nazi occupation. But it is more than a survivor's story because we are introduced to Ewa through reminiscences from her early life in Poland before the war. It is through her vivid story-telling that we gain insights into anti-Semitism before the Nazis; a segment of East European Jewish life that has now disappeared; and into the all-too-familiar patriarchal constraints on a young woman's ambitions and desires.
