I'm British But...
‘I’m British But…’ uses Bhangra music, Bangla music and the testimonies of sons and daughters of Asian Britons to discover a defiant popular culture – a synthesis, part Asian, part British.
Upbeat interviews with young Asians born and brought up in Britain take place in various environments ranging from discos, boutiques to restaurants. These interviews, combined with the use of music in the film, offer insight into a new generation who, by integrating Asian and Western culture, are creating a meaningful, new and powerful identity. ‘The idea of the film’, says the director, ‘was to document what was going on in the late 1980s in Britain as far as the British-born Asian community is concerned. It is very much a social document.'
