Impressions of Exile
Since the military coup in 1973 approximately one million people have left Chile to live in exile. More than three thousand came to Britain. It was especially difficult for the women, who had to face not only exile but a new culture in which the status of women is very different.
‘Impressions of Exile’ focuses on the personal struggle of three Chilean women living in Britain, learning a new language, and dealing with the racism and isolation they experience. The women trace their individual journeys towards a gradual gaining of strength and independence. Interspersed are images of the country they left behind – a montage of film postcards sent by another exile who has recently returned to Chile.
