Lesbian Health Matters
‘Lesbian Health Matters’ is a unique training video aimed at health professionals and students and which addresses the question of homophobia and prejudicial treatment within the health care services. It provides some positive examples of ways in which health care workers can avoid making assumptions when dealing with a patient. Originating from an idea of the London Lesbians in Health Care group, the video aims to raise awareness about how lesbian patients can potentially be alienated from using the health care systems. It focuses on issues of access to health care and consultation techniques and deals specifically with issues of confidentiality, sexual health and mental health.
‘Lesbian Health Matters’ includes a series of interviews with a broad range of lesbians who have experienced difficulties when using the health care systems. It also has dramatised examples of positive health practice. The final section deals with the past inadequacies of health care workers' training, in an attempt to polemically stress the urgency of a more serious approach to these subjects within medical, nursing and other health professionals' training.
