Women in two very different environments are shown making their own efforts to improve their circumstances and achieve equal rights.
The two areas are La Paz, Bolivia, and rural Zimbabwe, but for these women the critical issue is the same as for other women in the “global south”: how to ensure that their needs are taken into consideration in the formulation of economic policies and development strategies.

As I see it, we are looked down on by society, by husbands and by our own children, who see us as people of no importance. And, well, the labour we carry out, nobody recognises, and we work a lot, but we're always told we contribute nothing, that we're worth nothing. The life of women working in the poor districts involves much suffering. And we say – 'well, if we women were educated, to be able to do something, to act, maybe our ideas could mean something, and help in finding some solutions.’
