Speaking of Nairobi
In 1985 17,000 women descended on Nairobi for the International Women's Conference. Some were delegates to the official proceedings but the majority were participants in the thousands of informal workshops on the campus of Nairobi University.
The film gives evidence of the development of the women's movement internationally, as women's issues are seen to have become part of global political struggles.
‘Speaking of Nairobi’ attempts to show the contradictions between the sophisticated women participants at the Conference and the suburban and rural poor of Kenya. The politics of peace and the role of women are discussed along with other issues, fundamental to our survival and around which women, in particular, have organised.
