Lotte Reiniger was the pioneer of Silhouette film, a form of animation which she called “profile art”. In ‘The Dancing Silhouettes’ she tells the story of her life and how she came to develop her delicate outline figures. Interviewed towards the end of her life, we also see her at work – designing, cutting out, assembling and moving the characters – while cut in and out are excerpts from some of her many films dating between 1926-1979. Reiniger’s own history is interesting and the snippets from her films are intriguing, but the real fascination here lies in the minutiae of her intricate production process.
