‘The Electronic Sweatshop’ reveals the automation of work in a time of economic recession: the loss of control over work, the fragmentation of tasks, the mental strain and high levels of stress that result in many health problems, the new forms of electronic monitoring and, of course, redundancies.
Telephone operators act out scenes from work. They're very funny... a comedy based on tragedy. We don't know whether to laugh at the absurd situations or to cry when confronted with the exhaustion of these people at the end of a working day... The personal accounts that Sophie Bissonette gathered are all equally revealing of the dehumanisation process that the misfits of technological change are victims of.
