Babette Mangolte has called ‘There? Where?’ an essay on displacement. Fixing her camera on Southern California from the window of a car, the landscape appears to be held at a distance. At the same time a dialogue begins. Where are these voices, here or there? Are these images far or far away? Are the images commenting on the dialogue, or vice versa? Intentionally there are no references to where is what.
