Nightshift - Robina Rose, 1981.
Cinenova is delighted to announce the festival premieres of the newly restored Nightshift (1981) by Robina Rose. The film will be screened on the opening night of Arsenal’s Archival Assembly on Tuesday, 17th September, with Rose attending in person, followed by screenings at the New York Film Festival, beginning on Tuesday, 8th October.

 

Nightshift was shot on a low budget over five nights at the Portobello Hotel in West London, where Rose frequently worked. The film stars punk icon Jordan as a hotel receptionist and takes place during a single night shift. It contrasts the monotony of the work with dreamlike sequences featuring eccentric hotel guests, portrayed by prominent figures from London’s countercultural scene.The cast includes poet and actor Heathcote Williams, along with experimental filmmaker Anne Rees-Mogg. American independent filmmaker Jon Jost served as the director of photography, and the soundtrack was composed by Simon Jeffes of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Nightshift premiered at the 1981 Edinburgh Film Festival and was later shown at the 12th International Forum of New Cinema in 1982.

Nightshift has been digitally restored on behalf of Lightbox Film Center at University of the Arts (Philadelphia) in collaboration with The British Film Institute & Cinenova. Restoration funding provided by Ron and Suzanne Naples.

Restored in 4K resolution from the original 16mm reversal a/b rolls and 16mm optical track on loan from the British Film Institute. Restoration supervised by: Ross Lipman, Corpus Fluxus.
