Warrior Marks
Poetic and passionate in tone yet clearly focused in its message, ‘Warrior Marks’ unlocks some of the cultural and political complexities surrounding the issue of female genital mutilation. Interviews with women form Senegal, The Gambia, the United States and England who are concerned with and affected by genital mutilation are intercut with Alice Walker's personal reflections on the subject. Although the subject is painful, the film is not graphic; critical facts are intimated though a moving symbolic dance sequence.
Pratibha Parmar is the award-winning director of a number of films which deal with questions of race and sexuality including ‘A Place of Rage’, ‘Khush’ and ‘Sari Red’. After writing the novel ‘Possessing the Secret of Joy’ Alice Walker, Pullitzer Prize winning novelist was inspired to make a documentary film to further educate people about the issue of female genital mutilation. The collaboration between Pratibha Parmar and Alice Walker has produced remarkable results – a filmmaking journey that is a powerful mix of lyrical beauty and statistical information, distressing reports and inspiring thoughts – a moving movie about a critically important subject.
